The DSK Typeface
It was my intention to create a typeface that clearly expresses and defines my experiences and personal attitude toward design and aesthetics. As a designer, I am drawn to clean, minimal, symmetrical compositions. As a graffiti writer, I noticed that cleanliness, symmetry and balance had a lot to do with my positive response with other writers. I was known as having advanced, clean tags and the desire to continue creating letterforms with the same attributes has intrigued me as a designer. My initial attraction to typography is based on the futuristic and thought-bending ideas presented in graffiti letterforms. It was my goal to create a respected and honourable letterform, true to the roots and hand-styles of street calligraphers and artists.
My first step was to create a display typeface that carries the tradition and basic vision of what I have grown up being fascinated with. I went out to create a geometric, san-serif typeface with traces in graffiti hand scribe, but with a very simplistic, straight-forward and readable face. The font was meant to be used for the intent of a display face in print or on the web. The cultural aspects of this typeface are rooted in Western culture but are universal in appeal and understanding within the culture of hip hop and the urban lifestyle that is so much part of our society.
Foxy Production - Foxy United
The re-design and re-brand of a hip Chelsea Art Gallery was initiated by a custom designed typeface designed specifically for the client, based on the galley’s letter board signage in their entrance. Everything from the website, to the print advertisements, to the gallery’s rubber stamp was inspired with the simplicity and openness of the typeface.
uomodiva
Commissioned by an independent record label, Urbnet Music asked for a re-invention of a previous project called “Lightbombing.” The Canadian Hip Hop emcee, Moka Only, was projected onto the urban landscape. I designed a typeface for the endeavour called uomodiva. Extremely wide counters were well considered and allowed for Moka to be placed inside of them for moments throughout the video.
